Asks Gillian Wearing at The Whitechapel Gallery in London. The huge white cube gallery has four high plain wood viewing rooms where you enter to see Wearing’s film works. A bench to sit on or a wall to prop against is needed when confronted by the reversed black & white film Sacha and Mum (1996). Here the relationship between mother and daughter is shown full of unpredictable violence, anxiety and physicality. Sacha’s hair acts as a physical connection between the two women and I’m reminded of an article about how mothers and daughters use conversations and comments about hair to connect and disconnect.
